Mr. Nine wanted to make sure we go before the whole entire city parishes underwater. They’re saying this could happen someday and we were there only 48 hours, but we were told that currently at least three times a week St. Marks Square is underwater. The morning that we were leaving the tide was coming in and they were putting up planks up off the ground to get around. Our boat barely made it out in time to catch our flight.
When you land, a car takes you to an area where you get the boat to head to your hotel. I swear our heads were on swivels. It was amazing. We have been worried about the weather coming in, but the tide turned, and we had a beautiful couple days there. To be honest, really all you need is 2 to 3 days in Venice, it’s not that big. With that being said we did get lost on the second day and after 32,000 steps we finally found out where we needed to be, lol! But that’s just it we really didn’t have anywhere we needed to be and what better city to get lost in the Venice.
To get to Venice, we had to actually fly from Geneva, Switzerland with a layover in Zürich. Hindsight’s 2020 but we would have actually taken a luxury train from Zürich to Venice and not even gone to Geneva at all. I will touch more about that when I do my post on our time in Switzerland.
That night, we did have reservations to take a gondola ride at dusk. That was one of the things I was most excited about. Yes, it too was magical, but I will say you’re supposed to have 30 minutes on the boats. I had read in other reviews; they cheat you and we only ended up with 18 minutes. Plus, our gondolier was not very friendly and never spoke to us, but that’s OK. All Mr. Nine and I needed was each other and floating through the canals. Just look how cute our boat was. I really wanted someone to take a picture of the two of us instead of just selfies, I wish we would’ve hired one of the gondola rides with a Photographer built-in.
I was like that's the Gondola Guy, lol!"
Also note, there are more than 400 license gondoliers in Venice. I love that the majority of them wear the striped shirts. But I hope that there’s a majority that are friendly, lol. This guy was not our gondolier, lol!
Remember how we hired a Photographer in Paris? Mr. Nine even asked me if we were going to do on this trip especially in Venice and I wish we would’ve.
After the ride, we had reservations at a restaurant recommended to us by our travel agent called Antico Martini. Oh my gosh, can I tell you it was absolutely delicious. It was charming. The food was as you would expect it to be. DELICIOUS AUTHENTIC ITALIAN!! We got to sit outside; we just loved it. It was probably one of our favorite meals of the trip.
My dress of the night! Similar HERE // Belt HEREThen of course we went in search of gelato. For overseas trips we watched a lot of videos from a couple named Ian and Ana on YouTube. This was their favorite gelato in Venice, the gelato at Gelatoteca Suso
and it was amazing. Here is another tip: When you are looking for gelato in Italy, do not go into the shops where the gelato is brightly colored. It is full of artificial additives. Look for gelato that is lighter in color.
The next morning, we were happy to get up extra early just to explore before lots of other people were around. It was lovely to see the city quieter and capture some great photos like all these gondolas lined up.
Note, the breakfast buffet a this hotel was the only one on our entire trip staying
in 5 hotels that was not very good!
We were happy to hear from our hotel receptionist that a boat ride over to the island of Murano where they blow the beautiful glass was complementary, so we booked a trip over there.
It was up bright and early the next morning to go to the airport. Another tip is you want to definitely travel light when heading to Venice. If you have other suitcases along with you, I would highly suggest renting a locker, which was only five dollars a day at the airport, And keeping your bigger suitcases there. We combined our clothes into one little carry-on and it was so much easy to maneuver around and take a small suitcase on the boats.
Venice is one of those places I don’t know if we’ll get back to you, but I’m sure I am glad we got to see it in our lifetime! Highly recommended! The pic below is my favorite that Mr. Nine took and captures the magic of the city at night perfectly! Ciao!

Lovely photos of your time in Venice! It sounds like a wonderful two days there. I have been to Venice once and only for a day. It was not too far from where I did a six week summer abroad in southern Austria. I always thought it would be great to come back with someone I loved (I went with my host mom in Austria. We got along OK but we weren´t close or anything). Thanks for sharing your tips and lovely photos :).
ReplyDeleteVenice is definitely on my bucket list. It looks amazing and it sounds like a great time. I do like the idea of the luxury train ride in too. That may get added to my itinerary! Your trip sounds amazing.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos and outfits. I agree that you can see Venice in just 2 days. We went in 2014 and had a similar experience. I've seen it, checked it off the list, and probably won't go back. We had a great gondola ride, and I'm sorry your guy was such a grouch! Happy thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteWow Andrea, what a wonderful time you had in Venice. I love Venice and I've been there a few times. I love the gelato too and the food. Thanks for bringing us along on your trip. I hope you have a happy Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI am so happy that you guys had a wonderful time in Venice. I definitely want to go there someday; it looks so beautiful. You both look fantastic, and I might need that striped cardigan that you are wearing! XO, Caroline
ReplyDeleteThank you for sharing your trip photos. Looking so forward to the Switzerland post. And ordering the Amazon sweater...what a deal right now!
ReplyDeleteSo glad to see you back. I agree about Venice being a one and done. I'm glad I went but wouldn't go back. I thought it was stinky too!! I didn't like constantly getting lost in creepy walkways when we were trying to find our restaurant or hotel (with sore feet!). I'm glad we saw it and did a gondola ride. The food was good and it was magical at night (when we weren't lost). We took the train there from Cinque Terre and traveled light. We took that crazy boat to the airport and I'm glad we didn't have large bags. That was scary! Thank you for sharing your trip and tips!
ReplyDeleteWe did a week in Italy and Venice was our last top and our shortest! I agree you don't need a lot of time there. I don't know how to swim (I know, so bad!!), so Venice made me a little anxious due to that!!! Ha, ha! It was a hoot having to find a water taxi from the airport to get to Venice. We did two different types of canal tours, one with just us and then a bigger group one. I thought the food in Venice was the most costly of our entire trip (we did Rome, Florence (and Tuscany) and then Venice, but I had the best lasagna I've EVER had in Venice. I thought the food in Rome was the BEST, tho (which surprised me). I can't believe St. Marks Square floods that much, I wonder if that was the case back when we went prob 8 years ago?! I remember a layer of salt all over the buildings. It is a small little city, but ha ha I would prob get lost and walk that many steps to find my way back too! I am terrible with finding my way (thank goodness for GPS these days). LOVE your selfies, you two look like you had the most romantic trip!

Omg, what a dream trip! Venice is on the bucket list, for SURE. And of course you nailed it in the style department- so chic and timeless, but also super functional so you could navigate those city streets!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a lovely Thanksgiving, babe!

You were lucky to go when it wasn't high season. Then it's abnormal busy and even more stinky! And the water is full with waste then. So now you could have appreciated Venice the way it should. That is lovely.
ReplyDeleteVenice is somewhere that I would love to visit. It looks like you had a great trip and timed it right, I imagine it so busy in the summer.
ReplyDeleteWhat a dream of a trip! Venice has been on my bucket list forever! I'm so glad y'all had such a good time. And your outfits were perfection!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds incredible! I have always wanted to go to Venice too.
ReplyDeleteOh, what a dream to visit Venice, I am so happy you and Mr. Nine got to go there! I wouldn't have thought about it being a little smelly there haha, but for those views, I bet it's definitely worth it! That bruschetta looks so amazing, and the cannoli's too!! Now I'm hungry, haha! Such gorgeous pictures my friend, and just love that cardigan!
ReplyDeleteMake Life Marvelous
I was just thinking about you and thought you had dropped off the face of the earth. But I finally checked spam and that's where your emails had been going. Phew.
ReplyDeleteWhat an incredible trip and I love that it was so wonderful,
XOXO

Oh, I love Venice! What a wonderful trip and it looked like you had beautiful weather. We were there last June and it was 100 degrees - loved it anyway. I wish I had known you were going, I would have sent you to the BEST shoe shop - for hand made old fashioned velvet gondolier slippers. I love mine and they would be so perfect for you!
ReplyDeleteGosh this looks so amazing! All of the food is making me so hungry too! What an incredible trip!
ReplyDeleteOmg! Vanice is such a beautiful place, I wish to visit this place one day. Have a great day!

It had been too long since I visited your blog and what a perfect blog post to read: I have never been to Venice (I've been to Italy twice), but it sure looks pretty and a cool place to visit. I enjoyed all the photos!

Venice is on my bucket list and I'm so happy you had an amazing trip! The food and gelato sounds so yummy! I just love the architecture!

Just to say it is highly probable your Gondolier did not speak English, hence seemed unfriendly. Or maybe he was just unfriendly LOL.
