I have been reminiscing about childhood a lot recently. Man, those were the days; a non digital world, carefree and time, so much time. Fun meant being outside, scrapped knees from bike wrecks, Popsicles dripping down our chins and stress wasn't even a word on our radars yet. I often miss the 70's and 80's and sometimes even wish my kids had experienced our childhoods instead of the world we live in today. Here are some found remembrances of my childhood and the kid I was before double digits....

Here are some found remembrances of my childhood and the kid I was before double digits....
I WAS THE KIND OF KID WHO:
Washed her banana seat bike in the driveway like it was my Mercedes.
Put sponge rollers in my doll babies hair because if I had to endure sleeping in them, so did she.
I had one just like this..
Wore gingham, flowers in my hair & jewelry before age 5.
Mother/Daughter pics at Olan Mills were huge!

Got married at 5 to my Boy BFF, Ryan and my mom performed the ceremony. We got "married" at least once a week, lol
Lived for Saturday morning cartoons, favorites were The Smurfs, The Bugs Bunny/ RoadRunner Hour, Land of The Lost, Chip & Dale....(still watched in High School, only it was Pee Wee's Playhouse)
Organized all the neighborhood dodgeball games, fort building, and Tadpole catching adventures, etc... Type A ya know!
Dressed up my dog and took pictures of her with all my stuffed animals.
Mixed every perfume and powder my mom had and called it my "concoction."
Traded stickers like it was the stock exchange.

Got, as my mom would say, "brown as a berry" with my tan every summer because I lived outside & played softball.
5th grade
Gave a one girl concert belting out tunes and dancing everyday in the dining room or on the driveway.
Lifted those swing set poles right outta the ground
Sent a letter to Family Feud host Richard Dawson begging to let my family be contestants. Yep, mom, dad, Aunt Linda, Cousin Jimmy and me. I even had planned out what we'd be wearing. Imagine that!!
Told my first grade class teacher that my mom just had a baby named Heather (lie) .....because I desperately wanted a sibling...Read my post on Being An Only Child called Only....So Lonely
Had "Collections" of everything: stickers, candles, key chains, rocks, etc (now it's shoes, lol)

Olan Mills photos, remember very well. My babie photos were always done from there along with our family portraits. I was the mixed up kid who wasn't sure if I wanted to hang with the boys (being raised with 6 brothers) or the girls (longing to have a sister). So I hung with both sides.
ReplyDeleteLove it! We were outside all of the time, too! My mom didn't allow us to have a tv in our bedrooms and it used to make me so mad, but now I understand--we were together as a family all of the time!

ReplyDeleteI do wish our kids could experience the same type of childhood we did before all of the technology! I always wanted a banana seat bike when I was younger! One of my favorite shows was Land of the Lost too! Loved seeing all of these throwback photos! Have a great week!

Oh my goodness--you were just too adorable!! You look SO much like your mom--both absolutely beautiful! I once lied to a girl when we were on vacation and pretended I had a twin sister. I went back to our hotel room, changed my swimsuit, came back out and said I was the twin....only children problems!

First off, you look just like your mom!! Beautiful ladies. I love all of these old pictures too. I remember having sticker books and watching cartoons. I remember watching the Smurfs, He Man & She-Ra, and when I was little older Pee Wee's Playhouse. We also used to make up plays and swing on the swings for hours. Those were the days!!! Chris was an only child so he can relate to how you felt sometimes I'm sure. Thanks for sharing Andrea and I hope that you had a wonderful weekend! :-)

What a cute post, Andrea! I think about my childhood a lot as well -- what did we do without cell phones, Internet and all the technology?! Life was so simple, I miss it! Love all the pictures and that you put curlers in your doll's hair...I did too!

I really wish my kids had the childhood I did - well the fun parts of it. Riding bikes until dark, fishing, playing in the dirt, only watching tv for an hour or two, softball because it was the only summer sport for girls, mud pies! I miss it for my kids. I try to recreate it but they always end up with technology at some point. PS You look like your mama!!! Love to you!

I seriously ran the neighborhood with my friends, rode my bike everywhere... even walked pretty far away with a friend to a candy store. No way would that fly these days! I remember Saturday Morning cartoons, I wish they had them still so I could sleep in! ha!

Ahhh yes being a kid of the 80's, it certainly is quite different now then it was then. I really liked back then, we all had imaginations because we were forced to do things like go outside. Haha! I totally remember swinging and the poles coming up, I loved the smurfs!!!! And I totally had a sticker/stationary collection and used to have pen pals. You were such a cute kid!

ReplyDeleteOf course you were accessorizing before kindergarten! My cousin and I loved to make concoctions too. Any kind of makeup or powder or lotion we could get our hands on had to be mixed together. We made our parents suffer through a lot of impromptu living room dance recitals too!
ReplyDeleteOH life before technology, how did we ever survive with sitting on our parents laps while they were driving. Or even going to the local movie rental place owned by a sweet local family. I loved browsing all of the movie titles, hoping that something new would pop up :) Love this post!

I love this, you were just as gorgeous as a little girl! Olan Mills pictures -- yea!! I loved swinging. We had a playground size slide that my dad purchased from a local park that was renovating and it was huuuuge. In the summer we would spray it with the hose and put a tarp at the botto to make it a giant water slide haha and we rode down it on wax paper to go really fast! Oh man this post just brought back so many memories. Love love love!

ReplyDeleteI had a purple banana seat bike! I was a Navy brat so I didn't grow up with Sat morning cartoons. But we did have a swing set and I was afraid we were going to flip that thing! I played outside all the time, especially when we lived in Puerto Rico and our house was right on the beach! Talk about brown as a berry!

ReplyDeleteI just talking about this the other day with my friend - how we'd be outside, riding our bikes around and we just needed to be in shouting distance of my house in case my grandmother wants us back home. I hope in a way I can recreate that for my kids and make sure they have that type of independence. Looks like you had a great childhood! I love the bike you treated as a Mercedes - too funny!

ReplyDeleteI was the kind of kid who always wore gel shoes or Dr Sholl's. I rode my banana seat bike everywhere and ribbon barrettes in my hair. My arm usually had a good 15 or so Jelly bracelets and I loved making friendship bead pins for my sneakers.
